Are You a Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a popular treatment, but there are criteria that you have to meet to be eligible, such as:

  • Good health—for proper healing, you need to be healthy overall before having laser eye surgery.
  • Stable vision—if your vision is still shifting and changing too quickly, laser eye surgery may not help your vision.
  • Appropriate corneal thickness—since the cornea is being reshaped, there needs to be the right amount of cornea to work with.
  • Age—you need to be at least 18 to be considered as a laser eye surgery candidate.
  • A low-to-moderate prescription strength—people with very strong prescriptions are at a higher risk for complications, and the surgical payoff may not be worth the risk or cost.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, is a refractive surgery that changes how light is focused on the retina. It’s used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

LASIK is a very popular laser eye surgery treatment. The procedure involves the surgeon numbing the eyes, cutting a flap in the outermost layer of the cornea, reshaping the cornea with a laser, then replacing the flap for healing.

Following the procedure, it’s recommended that you take it easy for the remainder of the day and you may have to wear an eye shield at night while the flap heals. Your eyes may feel a little irritated or gritty, but you shouldn’t rub them and disturb the corneal flap’s healing.

Photorefractive keratectomy (or PRK), is a refractive laser eye surgery often recommended for people with dry eyes or thin corneas.

During the PRK procedure, the eyes are numbed with drops, the top layer of corneal cells is removed with a solution or brush, and the laser reshapes the cornea. It generally takes about 15 minutes.

PRK is recommended for those who need less downtime to heal—since there is no flap cut, there is no chance to dislodge that flap. One downside is that it does take a while for your vision to clear up and stabilize.

Are there Laser Eye Surgery Risks?

There are very few medical procedures that are risk-free. Though laser eye surgery has a very high success rate, the risks include:

  • Healing complications with the corneal flap
  • Infection
  • Dry eye
  • Light sensitivity
  • Halos
  • Glare
  • Discomfort or pain immediately following the procedure

On top of that, laser eye surgery cannot guarantee 20/20 vision. Some people still need corrective lenses after laser surgery, and you may still require reading glasses as you age.

Visiting your optometrist at StylEyes can help lower these risks. If you meet all the criteria and have proper pre-and-post operative care, the risks are low—90% of people who undergo this treatment have near-perfect vision following the procedure.
